News from the Hudson River Estuary Program

Three women help plant trees along a streamThe Hudson River Estuary Program’s Trees for Tribs program offers free native trees and shrubs for planting along the tributary streams in the Hudson River estuary watershed. Our staff can help you with a planting plan and work with your volunteers. Healthy buffers reduce erosion and flood damage and provide habitat for fish and wildlife.

Fall planting projects are now taking place. If you own or manage property near a stream in the Hudson estuary watershed, you can apply for assistance from Trees for Tribs. Landowners or managers must complete an application (PDF), and if the project is selected, recruit volunteers for planting, and maintain the site after the planting is complete.

For more information about the program or to download an application, please visit Hudson Estuary Trees for Tribs website. If you have questions about a potential planting site, please contact Beth Roessler at (845) 256-2253 or HudsonEstuaryTFT@dec.ny.gov.

Now in its 11th year, 7,000 Hudson Estuary Trees for Tribs volunteers have planted 50,000 shrubs and trees on 108 acres at 300 streamside sites.
