DEC Statement on EPA’s Failure to Require Ozone Reductions from Upwind States

Today, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Deputy Commissioner for Air Resources, Climate Change and Energy, Jared Snyder, testified at the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Determination Regarding Good Neighbor Obligations for the 2008 Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standard.”

Deputy Commissioner Snyder said, “The Trump Administration’s EPA needs to quit cozying up to polluters and do its job of actually protecting public health and the environment. Ozone pollution is a public health crisis, and as this summer’s ozone levels demonstrate, progress to reduce ozone has stalled. In New York, unhealthy ozone levels are due largely to air pollution transported from other states. So while EPA is allowing polluters to continue and even increase pollution, New Yorkers will pay the price in asthma attacks and other serious respiratory illnesses, increased hospital admissions, and increased mortality. Delay is not an option and EPA must stop disregarding the science and compel all states to do their share to reduce ozone levels.”
