DEC ‘On The Front Lines’ Video Features Environmental Engineer Sarah Saucier on Cleanup of Saranac Lake Superfund Site

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos is proud to present the latest episode of “On the Front Lines,” the agency’s video series profiling staff and their work to conserve the environment, protect New York’s natural resources, and serve the public.

“We are proud of this series, which gives the public a behind-the-scenes look at the great work our dedicated employees do every day across the state to preserve and protect the environment for generations to come,” Commissioner Seggos said. “It’s an opportunity for New Yorkers to learn more about the issues we tackle in their communities so that we can all reap the benefits of a healthy environment. A special thanks to DEC Environmental Engineer Sarah Saucier for her work managing the cleanup of the Saranac Lake Gas Company Superfund Site.”

A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, Saucier has worked with DEC’s Division of Environmental Remediation for nearly four years. She is the project manager of the Saranac Lake Gas Company Superfund Site, which operated as a manufactured gas plant from the 1800s to the 1940s, using coal to manufacture gas for heating, lighting, and cooking in the village. The plan left behind a tar by-product that got into the soil and groundwater at the site and migrated into nearby Brandy Brook and Pontiac Bay. DEC is overseeing all aspects of cleaning up the contamination to protect public health and the environment.

In this video, Saucier gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the cleanup process.

‘On the Front Lines’ is presented monthly on DEC’s YouTube channel, Facebook and Twitter pages. Watch past episodes on DEC’s YouTube channel.
