DEC Announces Temporary Closure of a Section of Devil’s Path/Long Path Trail

Portion of Temporary Trail Closure in Town of Hunter, Green County

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced that effective immediately, a temporary closure is now in place for a section of the Devil’s Path trail, beginning from the Pecoy Notch trail to the Twin Mountain summit. The temporary closure area is located within the Indian Head Wilderness Area in the Town of Hunter, Greene County. View a map of the closure area (PDF).

The temporary closure was put into effect after recent vandalism of the steel rungs that were installed in August 2019. The vandalism has created a safety hazard for visitors utilizing this section of trail.

Although the Devil’s Path trail will be closed on the western approach to Twin Mountain, visitors may still access the summit from the east utilizing the Jimmy Dolan Notch Trail from Prediger Road or via the Devil’s Path from Indian Head Mountain.

DEC will announce when the trail is reopened.
