Celebrate World Fish Migration Day May 21

New York is home to significant river and stream habitat that is critical to the life cycle of many migratory fish species. However, culverts and dams often block fish movement, dramatically shrinking the habitat available. World Fish Migration Day is a global initiative to create awareness about the importance of free-flowing rivers and streams for migratory fish. This year’s international day of events will be celebrated during “Break Free,” a virtual, live show broadcast on Saturday, May 21, from 10:30 a.m. – 12 noon.

The fast-paced broadcast will highlight dam removals and river restoration with live-streams from Colombia to Mongolia to New Zealand, and special guest appearances by Jeremy Wade, host of “River Monsters” and Zeb Hogan, host of “Monster Fish.” Kenyan environmentalist and rapper will provide music for the event. Chris Bowser, education coordinator for DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program and Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve, will host “Break Free,” along with organizers from the Netherlands and Portugal. For more information and to register for the event, visit the World Fish Migration Day Live Show website.
