Earth Day is April 22
DEC is commemorating the 49th anniversary of Earth Day with DEC-sponsored and partner events around the state from April 20 through 27. Governor Cuomo recently issued an Earth Day Proclamation (PDF) celebrating New York’s environmental leadership. Earth Day began as a national recognition in 1970 to highlight pollution and other environmental issues in the United States. Decades later, it is recognized around the globe as we raise awareness of the need to positively impact our planet and live green (environmentally-friendly lifestyle). Here at DEC, we celebrate the earth and all it’s wonderful natural resources all week long. Check out the Earth Week events and tips below!

Here are just a few Earth Day tips you can incorporate everyday. You can also find a complete list of 50 Earth Day Tips on our website.
- Set the refrigerator temperature between 38◦F and 42◦F.
- Set the freezer temperature between 0◦F and 5◦F.
- Use cloth napkins.
- Hang laundry outside to try.
- Shut off the sink while brushing your teeth.
- Install a low-flow shower head.
- Raise shades on winter days; lower them in summer.
- Avoid pesticides; use nontoxic alternatives.
- Water the grass early in the morning.
- Don’t overfill the fuel tank in the care.
- Buy concentrated cleaners and detergents.
- Hike, row, sail, ski or paddle – don’t motor.
- Observe, don’t disturb wildlife and plant life.
- Recycle.
