We’re gearing up for this year’s WAVE and NYSDEC’s Professional Stream Sampling seasons.
Staff in NYSDEC’s stream section are selecting sites for the 2018 professional stream sampling program. Several WAVE sites are among the list of proposed sampling locations. See the complete list here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1x_r7BuI0Y_Ut0SQWX0TdWVGAPd4mVfWL&usp=sharing
WAVE sites that are found to be “possibly impaired” or that had low habitat scores have mostly been added to this list. If your site is not on this list and you feel it deserves further investigation, please contact wave@dec.ny.gov.
The WAVE sampling season is also fast approaching. We have posted training sessions online so hopefully it will be easier to participate.
Anyone who can kick over a rock can participate in WAVE by following these simple steps:
- Get trained in the WAVE method by visiting the WAVE Training Sessions Page: wave to get connected today!
- Sign the WAVE waiver. WAVE participants must sign and mail in the WAVE waiver (https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/water_pdf/wavewaiver2018.pdf) to participate.
- Get Equipment – A limited number of kick nets and sample vials are available through the Equipment Loan Program. We are prioritizing equipment to those groups sampling several stream locations. Apply online by JUNE 1st at: https://goo.gl/forms/49hbT7G1EJfDD1Ov1.
- Stay in the Loop. WAVE announcements are distributed through DEC’s email list serve. To sign up, enter your email address in the blue “DEC Delivers” box on http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/92229.html.
Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Here’s to a productive sampling season!!
