Restoration of Watershed Connectivity

Fresh water river and stream habitats are linked to the estuary through a network of tributary connections. Each year, migratory fish must navigate these pathways to move between feeding, nursery, and spawning grounds. Many culverts and dams are blocking fish movement, dramatically shrinking the habitat available, and are too small for high flows from intense rain and storm flooding.

Measuring a deterioirating perched culvert$215,000 in funding is now available from DEC to help communities document constrictions that cause flooding at culverts and bridges and are barriers to fish movement in Hudson tributary streams. Funding for this grant is provided by the State’s Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) and is administered by DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program, in partnership with the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC).

The purpose of the grant is to develop municipal management plans and designs to improve inadequate road-stream crossings through a regional approach that restores aquatic connectivity and reduces flood hazards in multiple municipalities. The deadline for applications is August 2, 2019 at noon. The “Restoration of Watershed Connectivity” RFP and link to the online proposal submission is available on NEIWPCC’s Contractor Opportunities web page. General information about the RFP can be found on DEC’s website.
